Nature and wildlife

Costa Rica packs incredible wildlife into a small country: sloths, toucans, monkeys, sea turtles, all visible without much effort. Colombia offers more ecosystem variety (Amazon, Caribbean, Andes, Pacific coast, paramo, coffee cloud forest) but wildlife is spread out and harder to spot without a specialized guide.

Beaches

Colombia has the Caribbean coast (Cartagena, Rosario Islands, Tayrona, San Andres, Providencia). Costa Rica has both Pacific and Caribbean coasts with great surfing (Tamarindo, Nosara, Santa Teresa). Colombia wins on Caribbean turquoise water, Costa Rica wins on surf culture.

Cities and culture

Colombia has world class cities (Medellin, Cartagena, Bogota, Cali) with salsa, coffee culture, street food and nightlife. Costa Rica has smaller towns and less urban culture, San Jose is usually a transit city rather than a destination.

Which is right for you

  • Pick Colombia if you want cities, culture, cheaper prices, salsa, coffee, and more regional diversity
  • Pick Costa Rica if you want polished tourism, wildlife, short distances, surfing, and less cultural friction
  • Pick both if you have 3 weeks and want the full Latin America sampler
